Our doctors can issue prescriptions for all standard medicines. However, we do not prescribe:

  • controlled medications such as morphine, dihydrocodeine, pethidine, methylphenidate and oxycodone
  • certain medications that can only be started by specialists (e.g. warfarin)
  • specialist medications for drug and alcohol addictions

No, this is included in the cost of the GP consultation. You just have to pay the cost of the actual medication to the pharmacy that dispense the medication. You do not have to pay the standard NHS charge of £9 per item. Sometimes the cost of the medication may be less or more than this, but for most common medications it is similar to what you may pay in the NHS. You can take the private prescription to any pharmacy.
